Rosenthal Scholarship Update

Dear California Law Schools,

I have an important update regarding the Foundation of the State Bar’s 2006 Rosenthal Scholarship. In connection with a recent arrangement made with BAR/BRI, we are also adding BAR/BRI review courses to give to some scholarship recipients in lieu of a cash award.

As you know, we award Rosenthal Scholarship to help defray part of the costs of the California Bar Exam fees and related expenses. This year, we expect to award approximately 15 Rosenthal Scholarships, of which the top 5 winners will receive a BAR/BRI review course for the July 2006 Bar Exam, and the remaining 10 winners will receive a $1,000 cash scholarship. Given that the cash value of the BAR/BRI review course is approximately $3,000, we hope that the recipients will be pleased with this change. As many students have already paid a deposit with BAR/BRI, BAR/BRI has agreed to either refund the deposit or apply such deposit to the refundable materials deposit required to receive the review books (which each BAR/BRI winner will still have to pay on their own). To the extent a BAR/BRI course recipient prefers the cash prize, we will do our best to see if a cash winner would like to receive the BAR/BRI award instead. If this program is positively received, we will consider implementing it again in 2007. I would appreciate your and your students’ feedback about this change.

As mentioned before, because we are increasing the amounts awarded in the Rosenthal Scholarship program, we are able to award less scholarships (last year, we awarded 31 Rosenthal Scholarships ranging from $250-500). We hope that we can make a greater impact by making more meaningful awards. Please pass along this updated information about the two different possible Rosenthal awards to your school’s nominees.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions about these changes to the 2006 Rosenthal Scholarship Program, or any other scholarship program.

Regards, Joilene
